Water Sky

Water sky is the name given to the phenomenon where the underside of low-lying clouds appears darker over open water than over sea ice. For generations, experienced ice navigators have relied on this subtle difference to help find leads of open water while travelling through the frozen Southern Ocean.

Painted in watercolor on archival Arches Hot Press paper, this original artwork takes me back to my first journey across Antarctic sea ice and the conversations with the ice pilot who first taught me about water sky. It's one of those quiet pieces of polar knowledge that, once learned, forever changes the way you see Antarctica.
