Ice Shelf Approach was inspired by one of the most awe-inspiring sights I've ever experienced: approaching an immense Antarctic ice shelf or towering tabular iceberg by ship. Their sheer scale is almost impossible to comprehend until you're standing before them.
An ice shelf is a vast platform of floating ice that has flowed from the Antarctic Ice Sheet onto the ocean. By slowing the flow of ice from the continent into the sea, ice shelves help stabilize the ice sheet behind them. A tabular iceberg forms when a piece of an ice shelf eventually breaks away, carrying that flat-topped shape out into the Southern Ocean.
Painted in watercolor on archival Arches Hot Press paper, this original reflects the polar landscapes that have left the deepest impression on me and continue to inspire much of my science communication work.
